BACKGROUND

assault_pod_1.JPG (17502 bytes)The Robotech Masters at the end of the Disciple of Zor Rebellion came to the realization that the standard Tactical Battle Pod (Regult) was vastly outclassed by the more advanced DoZ designs.  Often large groups of Regults were destroyed before they could even come into weapons range of the enemy.  Furthermore with increased Invid attacks and the corresponding advances in their mecha weaponry (Invid Shock Trooper and Armored Scout), a newer model was needed.

The Assault Pod was in the spirit of the previous modifications Regult modifications.  The basic Regult body type was left unchanged, adhering to the standard Zentraedi design of cheaply produced lightly armored mecha.  The only change was the addition of a PB-19b particle beam cannon, that was in the development stage to replace the standard PB-19 found on the Glaug Officer Battle Pod.  This new cannon had a increased rate of fire over the standard model at the cost of a slightly decreased range (see PB-19b weapon description below).  With the addition of the PB-19b, the Assault Pod could fire upon enemy mecha at much longer ranges than before and would be able to destroy large groups of Invid before the Assault Pod came within plasma disk range.  The Robotech Masters hoped that this new design would slowly replace the standard Regult at the primary frontline unit and thus help them regain the advantage over the incoming Invid hordes.

Only 1,000 Regult-Assaults were ever produced.  The mecha performed admirably, however, with the masters power waning and the protoculture supplies dwindling, the cost of production and retooling the Robotech factories began prohibitive.  The most famous encounter with Assault Pods occurred in March 2010 at the RDF Weapons and Research Base Gibraltar located in the asteroid belt.  The Zentraedi Major Calen led his special forces team against the base which included approximately 50 Regult-Assaults.   Although the base was destroyed at the end of the fight, the entire Zentraedi force (including Major Calen) was eliminated.  However, the Assault Scout proved its worth destroying large numbers of the automated ghost fighters.

WEAPON SYSTEMS:

  1. PB-19B PARTICLE BEAM CANNON: The Assault Pod has an advanced version of the PB-19 particle beam cannon.  Originally designed as a replacement for the PB-19 on the Glaug Officer's Pod, this weapon was designed to fire at an increased rate over the standard PB-19.  The increase in firing rate, unfortunately results in a lessened range as increased heatsinks needed for the rapid fire mode interfere with the alignment magnets.

  2. 2 x PB-10 : A four barrel gattling type weapon.  Each barrel can fire 2.5 MJ of energy once per second.  All four barrels can be fired at once for maximum localized damage or in series to increase the probability of a hit.

  3. 2 x AC-L :  The Assault Pod mounts two 22.3mm autocannons on the lower portion of the main pod housing.  These weapons are usually used for anti-personnel use or against unarmored targets.  The AC-L can fire either standard shells, armor piercing, or high explosive shells at a rate of 850 rounds a minute.

  4. HAND TO HAND COMBAT: is limited to kick attacks, body blocks and stomps because of the assault pod's lack of hands.
